Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)

Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)

We understand that undergoing medical tests, specifically ones that involve investigating nerve health, can be intimidating. At Brisbane Neurology, our team is here to ensure your experience during an NCS is as comfortable as possible, offering you support, information, and clear communication every step of the way.

What is a Nerve Conduction Study?

An NCS is a diagnostic procedure that evaluates how efficiently your nerves transmit electrical signals. During the test, small electrical impulses stimulate specific nerves, and we measure how quickly and strongly the nerve responds. This allows our team to assess nerve function and detect any abnormalities that may contribute to your symptoms.

All our nerve conduction studies are performed either by a neurologist directly or with an experienced scientist who is closely supervised by a neurologist.

Preparing for Your NCS

Our team will provide you with any specific preparation instructions based on your individual needs, but here are some general instructions to help you prepare:

  • Please do not wear any lotions/creams as it interferes with the application of the pads.

What to Expect During Your NCS

Your NCS will be performed in a calm and comfortable setting by a trained technician or neurologist. Small, sticky electrodes will be placed on your skin over the nerve areas to be examined. The test involves brief electrical impulses to stimulate your nerves, and while some patients feel mild tingling or a twitch, the sensation is generally well-tolerated and short-lived. As your nerve responds, the electrodes will capture and record the signals, providing us with crucial information about the speed and strength of your nerveโ€™s response.

The entire procedure usually takes 30-60 minutes, depending on the number of nerves being studied. After the test, you can resume your normal activities right way, and any temporary sensations should quickly subside. No damage to the nerves occurs as a result of this testing.
